“on your Face…”

Etched and patinated copper, enamel paint

My work is intertwined with the memories, love, and shared experiences of my family. This series draws inspiration from a deck of cards and a game called Scat that has been a tradition throughout my life. Playing this game has created connections and laughter, bonding both sides of my family and continuously creating a sense of home. To make moments with my family more permanent, each card is etched with an image of someone special to me: my mom, dad, sister, and both sets of grandparents.

The numerical details hold layered meaning. My parents share a birth year of 1973; my sister’s card reflects her birth date of February 23; my maternal grandparents are represented by their birth years of 1944 and 1947; and my paternal grandparents by their marriage year of 1969. At the center of the composition, two additional cards, one in reference to my own identity: a five, marking my birth month and personal lucky number, and a ten, which would complete a suited ace, ten, face card, a round-winning Scat hand. On the reverse side of the cards, there is an ornamental design that subtly conceals my last name within the pattern.
